Hello cohen, That is a wonderful question and not commonly addressed by veterinarians as well as I would like. Cats are very different then dogs or humans. Dogs and humans are omnivores (eat meat and veggies) and cats are called pure carnivores. Cats by nature would never eat carbohydrates except what was in the gut of their prey when they ate them. Cats do not have the ability to digest and utilize carbohydrates like humans or dogs so it often leads to sugar spikes and obesity. The chronic exposure to carbohydrates and obesity are linked to diabetes in cats. Cats are also prone to urinary problems that come from having very concentrated urine in part due to dry food. So I am not a fan of feeding adult healthy cats a primarily dry food. I would much prefer a canned diet as the moisture content and protein content is much more appropriate for a cat. For an average size 10lb cat I recommend feeding 1/2 of a tuna size high quality canned food in the am and pm. During the day I like a couple of food dispensing toys filled with dry food for them to play with (like a buster cube for example) to stimulate activity. I would put a senior dry food in the cubes and feed the 7 year old a high quality senior canned formula and the one year old a high quality adult canned food. Cats are more fun then dogs with the feeding because you can give them variety. Try chicken, turkey, fish, beef and rotate with whatever your cats like best. I also feel as if Iams makes a good quality product. pi xiu If you were to eat 2,000 calories a day of donuts, cookies, and cake would you look the same as if you were eating 2,000 calories a day of lean protein, fibrous vegetables, and starchy carbohydrates? The answer is clearly no. So, instead of counting everything that goes into one’s mouth, if we start to focus more on eating less processed, refined foods and eating more natural untouched foods, our bodies can begin to tell us better if we need to eat more or less.I know you were looking for a simple number here, but that will just lead to ultimate failure in an attempt to change.
